Polish farmers stand on a strike post by the road as they start to block truck transport in Medyka - another border crossing between Poland and Ukraine, on November 23, 2023. The farmers joined the transport sector in the strike against poor management of agricultural imports of Ukrainian produce as well as demand renegotiation of transport deals between Ukraine and the European Union. Medyka is the fourth strike site. Protesters already blocked 3 other crossings for truck transport, allowing only 4 trucks per an hour excluding humanitarian and military aid and sensitive chemical and food goods. According to the drivers, the queue to the Medyka crossing was nearly 7 days even before the strike started today. (Photo by Dominika Zarzycka/NurPhoto via Getty Images)
This was reported by the spokesperson of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, Andriy Demchenko, during an interview with KYIV24.
Currently, there are 2,500 trucks blocked at the Polish border. This information comes from our Polish colleagues. This situation is observed at these six checkpoints where farmers continue to block or impede the movement for freight vehicles.
According to Andriy Demchenko, the longest queues are currently observed at the blocked checkpoints of “Krakovets” and “Yagodyn”. Out of the 9 available checkpoints, 6 are blocked.
The largest queues are opposite the “Krakovets” and “Yagodyn” checkpoints. Overall, there are 9 checkpoints operating on the border with Poland, and 6 directions where Polish farmers continue to block. This includes 4 directions towards Lviv region and 2 towards Volyn region.
President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the situation at the Polish border has long exceeded the limits of economics and morality.
Numerous farmer protests have been taking place throughout Poland for several consecutive days. Their participants block roads, highways, motorways, and border crossings with Ukraine. Farmers protest against the influx of Ukrainian goods and against the European Union’s policy associated with the so-called “Green Course”.
The organizers of the blockade in Poland, the recently created “Committee for the Protection of Carriers and Employers in the Transport Industry”, claim that the action is economic and not political. However, their actions have not found support among the authorities and other organizations of carriers. Nevertheless, the protest is being actively supported by the consistent anti-Ukrainian and anti-European party “Konfederacja”, whose representatives are the most vocal in expressing anti-Ukrainian statements, fighting against Ukrainian refugees in the media, and already billing for assistance to Ukraine and its citizens.
At the same time, as journalists from the “Ukrainska Pravda” found out, thousands of trucks with Russian grain and other agricultural products freely pass through the border from Belarus to Poland.
