“Are elections possible in Ukraine before the end of the war?” – an expert’s opinion

Political scientist Volodymyr Fesenko shared this view on KYIV24.

“As long as the war is not over, elections are unlikely to take place in Ukraine. If everything goes well and we manage to end the war or at least the active phase of the war by the end of the year, then there will be an opportunity to hold presidential elections, as stipulated in the Constitution, as well as parliamentary elections simultaneously. My forecast is that when we have a ready draft law on amendments to the electoral code, changes to the budget with allocated funds for elections, then it will definitely mean that preparations for the elections are underway. I do not see a tragedy at the moment. There is the first problem – parliamentary elections may not take place. According to the law, the election campaign should start at the end of August for them to be held. It is unlikely that active combat operations will end in the summer. It is a doubtful scenario. It is better to liberate more of our territories than to rush to hold elections at any cost”, the political scientist said.

It should be noted that the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Tiny Kox, considers it necessary for Ukraine to hold parliamentary and presidential elections. According to him, there are examples of other countries that organized proper voting in elections abroad. In addition, there is the possibility of voting online.
