Besarabsky Market is celebrating 110 years of existence: how does the market function under martial law

The Besarabsky market started working 110 years ago. The municipal enterprise is gradually stabilizing its business under martial law and continues to involve direct traders in order to provide the residents of the capital with high-quality and safe food, the website of the Kyiv City Council reports.

“Today, the market works and continues the quality traditions of the best capital products. It has become a visit card for foreign tourists who want to try authentic Ukrainian delicacies. Over the past month, the number of visitors to the Besarabsky Market has doubled, and the upward trend continues. The market is also inviting cooperation,” the post reads.

The Kyiv City Council emphasized that due to the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation and the declaration of martial law, the Bessarabsky market did not work at full capacity from February 24 to April 16, 2022. Most of entrepreneurs and tenants, as well as visitors, temporarily left for safe places, some enterprises located in the Kyiv region were under occupation, which led to the disruption of logistical connections and the cessation of the supply of goods.

Today, the Bessarabsky Market is gradually stabilizing its activities and is happy to welcome customers. And in order to improve the current situation, it is waiting for proposals from business entities regarding the sale of agricultural products on the market, the Kyiv City Council emphasized.

Also, the Kyiv City Council reminded that from 2015 to 2022, restoration work on the facade of the building was carried out on the Besarabsky market, the roofing parts of the roof were replaced and fast-food spaces were arranged. Before the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, restoration work was planned on the Besarabsky Market.

It is reported that the market building, which has not changed since 1912 despite military actions and revolutions, is a national significance monument “and today continues to fulfill its historical mission – a food market.”
