Crimea has become a prison for people from the territories occupied by Russia

This was stated by the head of the board of the Crimean Human Rights Group, Olga Skrypnyk, on KYIV24.

“The UN report does not mention another trend known to them. But for some reason, they did not include it in the report. Crimea has become a prison for the newly occupied territories. Civilians from Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions are taken by Russians to Simferopol. All of them become victims of torture. Moreover, not just once”, Skrypnyk said.

She explained that initially, civilians are tortured by Russian military, as was the case in Kherson. Then they are transported to Simferopol in Crimea, where they are tortured again by FSB representatives. Therefore, the cases of torture are significantly higher.

“Hundreds and hundreds of cases of torture of our citizens. And it’s the same now. In Simferopol, citizens from Crimea and from the newly occupied territories are still being held. They are systematically subjected to torture, usually in order to fabricate criminal cases”, Skrypnyk added.

How Russians abduct civilians and activists in Crimea

On March 5, 10 Crimean Tatars were arrested in Crimea on charges of alleged terrorism.

Russian law enforcement officers stormed the homes of Crimean Tatars in Bakhchysarai and the Dzhankoy district. Among those detained are religious figures and activists of the public association “Crimean Solidarity”. Over the past 10 years, the UN has documented 104 cases of abductions of pro-Ukrainian individuals in Crimea.

Occupiers illegally detain Crimean Tatar activists and activists on the peninsula. This was reported by the Office of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. Yesterday morning, Russian law enforcement officers searched 10 houses in Bakhchysarai, Dzhankoy, and the Dzhankoy district.

After these illegal checks, ten people were detained. According to preliminary information, they are accused of involvement in a terrorist organization. According to Crimean lawyer Edem Semedlyaev, the detainees disagree with the court’s decision and will appeal it. It is known that the activists were sent to the pre-trial detention center in Simferopol, where they will be illegally detained during the so-called “investigation.” It is important to note that since the annexation of Crimea in 2014, about 50,000 Crimean Tatars have been forced to leave the peninsula. People began leaving the peninsula actively, especially when the occupiers announced the mobilization into the Russian army in September 2022.
