“Energoatom” has insured Ukrainian NPPs against nuclear incidents

This information was reported by the National Atomic Energy Company “Energoatom”.

In June of this year, “Energoatom” entered into an insurance contract worth over 5 billion UAH for damages resulting from a nuclear incident at all four nuclear power plants in Ukraine.

It was specified that the corresponding contract states that insurance coverage for the Zaporizhia NPP is provided with a deferred condition after the station is liberated from the occupiers since it is currently not under Ukraine’s control, and the sole legitimate operator is the State Enterprise “National Atomic Energy Company “Energoatom”.

However, the company does not control the actions of the occupiers and does not manage the reactor facilities in accordance with Ukrainian nuclear legislation, and therefore cannot be held responsible for all nuclear risks that may arise at the occupied Zaporizhia NPP.

“As for all other domestic nuclear power plants operating on the territory under Ukrainian control, insurance for nuclear damage that may be caused by a nuclear incident is fully in effect. Similar exclusions for war-related nuclear incidents were also present in previous insurance agreements of Energoatom and are a standard global practice”, the statement said.
