HREBENNE, POLAND - DECEMBER 1: Ukrainian trucks sit blocked by Polish protesters on the road near the Polish Ukrainian border crossing Hrebenne on December 1, 2023 in Hrebenne, Poland. Polish truck drivers continue to block the main Polish-Ukrainian border crossing points for freight traffic. The key demand of Polish protesters is to bring back the system of issuing permits for Ukrainian carriers to work in the EU. Due to the strike, about 3,000 Ukrainian trucks are already waiting in line; two deaths among Ukrainian drivers were recorded. The Polish Minister of Infrastructure called on Ukraine to fulfill all the demands of the Polish protesters. This was reported in a comment to Radio Liberty by the spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service (SBGS) Andriy Demchenko.
According to information received by Ukrainian border guards from their Polish counterparts, this blockade will last for an hour.
At the same time, the spokesperson for the Lviv Border Guard Unit, Oleksandra Kuchkovska, reported that currently, the longest queue is at Korchova – 970 trucks, as drivers, bypassing the blocked crossing points, were massively heading there.
As of the morning of February 13, on the Polish side of the Ukraine-Poland border, the operation of five border crossing points is blocked: “Dorohusk – Yahodyn”, “Zosin – Ustyluh”, “Hrebenne – Rava-Ruska”, “Shehyni – Medyka”, “Dolhobychiv – Uhornyky”.
It is worth reminding that as of the morning of February 13, Polish farmers have blocked five border crossing points on the border with Ukraine. There are over a thousand trucks waiting in queues.
The organizers of the blockade in Poland, the recently created “Committee for the Protection of Carriers and Employers in the Transport Industry,” claim that the action is economic and not political. But that is not true. However, their actions have not found support among the authorities and other organizations of carriers. Nevertheless, the protest is being actively supported by the consistent anti-Ukrainian and anti-European party “Konfederacja,” whose representatives are the most vocal in expressing anti-Ukrainian statements, fighting against Ukrainian refugees in the media, and already billing for assistance to Ukraine and its citizens.
