This was reported on KYIV24 by the head of the sector for the preservation and development of intangible cultural heritage at the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine, Anastasiia Koziar.
Due to the enemy missile attack on Chernihiv, a locally significant architectural landmark, the Chernihiv Regional Academic Ukrainian Music and Drama Theater named after Taras Shevchenko, was completely destroyed. Additionally, a nationally significant architectural landmark, the Pyatnytska Church, was damaged. In 2023, the Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with regional and local administrations, began submitting the cultural landscape of Chernihiv for inclusion in the list of cultural heritage sites under enhanced protection. The historical center of Chernihiv was also pre-submitted for consideration as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Currently, Chernihiv is in the candidate stage for this recognition.
Recalling that on August 19, Russian occupiers struck the center of Chernihiv with a ballistic missile. It was reported that the enemy projectile hit the city’s drama theater where a closed event was taking place. According to the head of the military administration, there were no third-party visitors in the Chernihiv drama theater at the moment of the strike, but this will be determined by the investigation. Investigative actions are currently ongoing for the exhibition.
Today, August 21, the number of casualties as a result of the Russian missile strike on the center of Chernihiv on August 19 has risen to 156 individuals.
