Scholz vows to support Ukraine until victory

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said this at the Berlin Security Conference on November 30.

“We will continue to support Ukraine for as long as it takes: economically, financially, in a humanitarian manner, through the reconstruction of the destroyed energy infrastructure, as well as with weapons,” the chancellor said, admitting that this war affects the Germans as well.

According to him, Ukraine must be given an opportunity to exercise its legitimate right to self-defense. This also serves to protect Europe’s security architecture, Scholz said. He said he was convinced that Russia could not and would not win the war it started.

“The relentless attacks on vital infrastructure, on water and energy lines, on Ukrainian cities and villages – this is a terrible and at the same time desperate scorched earth strategy,” he said.

Russia’s behavior in Ukraine has changed the security environment in Europe, the chancellor said. He said that Germany had learned lessons from this for its own defense and support of allies.

Scholz also noted that the West takes the Russian regime’s irresponsible nuclear rhetoric very seriously. “But we will not allow ourselves to be intimidated,” the politician said. To that end, he said, the federal government has decided to purchase F-35 fighter jets as part of the German nuclear program.
