Polish farmers stand on a strike post by the road as they start to block truck transport in Medyka - another border crossing between Poland and Ukraine, on November 23, 2023. The farmers joined the transport sector in the strike against poor management of agricultural imports of Ukrainian produce as well as demand renegotiation of transport deals between Ukraine and the European Union. Medyka is the fourth strike site. Protesters already blocked 3 other crossings for truck transport, allowing only 4 trucks per an hour excluding humanitarian and military aid and sensitive chemical and food goods. According to the drivers, the queue to the Medyka crossing was nearly 7 days even before the strike started today. (Photo by Dominika Zarzycka/NurPhoto via Getty Images)
This was reported by the Ministry of Community Development, Territories, and Infrastructure of Ukraine.
Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal stated that they discussed the situation at the border and trade in the agricultural sector during the meeting. Currently, there are 120 trucks waiting in the border queue. Unimpeded passage is expected to last until April 2nd.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk also spoke about progress in resolving issues related to agro-imports and road transport. According to him, a step forward has been made in agriculture. He added that they are close to finding solutions that will protect the main interests of both Polish farmers and producers, as well as Ukrainian ones.
Ukraine hopes that today’s consultations will yield results and help find ways to resolve outstanding issues between the two countries.
Earlier, it was reported that Polish law enforcement officers detained Mykhailo Tkach near the Polish-Belarusian border. The journalist was also filming material about transit of goods between Poland and Russia and Belarus.
Journalists from “Ukrayinska Pravda” conducted an investigation, which revealed a significant increase in the transit of agricultural products from Russia through Belarus to Poland. It is noted that this includes oil, seeds, and animal feed.
The organizers of the blockade in Poland, the recently created “Committee for the Protection of Carriers and Employers in the Transport Industry”, claim that the action is economic and not political. However, their actions have not found support among the authorities and other organizations of carriers. Nevertheless, the protest is being actively supported by the consistent anti-Ukrainian and anti-European party “Konfederacja”, whose representatives are the most vocal in expressing anti-Ukrainian statements, fighting against Ukrainian refugees in the media, and already billing for assistance to Ukraine and its citizens.
