The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to accusations of organizing anti-Semitic disturbances in Dagestan (Russia)

Oleg Nikolenko, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made this statement.

The accusations by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs against Ukraine regarding events in Dagestan are an effort to shift responsibility from the guilty party to an innocent one. We firmly believe that the international community should strongly react to manifestations of racial hatred in Russia and anywhere in the world.

According to Nikolenko, threats against Jews are the result of the Russian state propaganda’s work, which has cultivated feelings of hatred among Russians towards other nations for decades.

Disturbances in Makhachkala

On Sunday, October 29, in Makhachkala (Dagestan, Russia), participants in an anti-Semitic action stormed the airport and attempted to board a plane from Tel Aviv, looking for Jews, while letting Russians pass. A crowd of Dagestanis gathered in search of refugees from Israel. Over 20 people were affected as a result of the disturbances at the airport.

Among the injured were both police officers and civilians, with two in critical condition. According to Rosaviatsia, the Makhachkala airport is closed for receiving aircraft until at least November 6.

Later, the Russian authorities accused Ukraine of organizing anti-Semitic pogroms. The head of Dagestan, Sergei Melikov, condemned the disturbances involving the search for Jews at Makhachkala airport but stated that the calls for such actions came from Ukraine.

Meanwhile, NATO stated that the disturbances at the Dagestan airport in Makhachkala are not in the Kremlin’s interest, even though they are a result of the incitement of hatred by Russian propaganda.
