The Ukrainian Space Agency has named the cause of the nighttime flash in the sky over Kyiv

They noted that the Main Center for Special Monitoring of the State Space Agency of Ukraine recorded a high-energy acoustic event at 21:57. And the calculated epicenter of the explosion is located in the Kyiv region.

“Every year in April, the Earth passes through the tail of the Comet Thatcher, which leaves the Lyrid meteor stream. These are very fast and bright meteors caused by the tail of the Comet Thatcher”, the agency said.

They added that Lyrids do not leave long-lasting burning trails when they pass through the Earth’s atmosphere. Their characteristic is bright flashes or so-called fireballs. The Lyrid meteor stream is one of the oldest known to humanity.

The agency warned that the peak of the meteor shower will be on April 21. It is known that the Earth entered the tail of Comet Thatcher on April 15 and will exit it on April 29. A similar phenomenon to Kyiv’s was observed in France this February – a meteor also fell there and burned up in the atmosphere.

Recall that yesterday, April 19, at about 22:00 on April 19, a bright glow was observed in the sky within Kyiv, and an air alarm was announced. The military administration of the city said that according to preliminary information, it was the falling of a NASA satellite to Earth. However, NASA denied this version.
