The UN has gathered evidence of torture of Ukrainians in the territories occupied by Russia

This was stated by the head of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine at the UN, Eric Meser, as reported by Reuters.

His team has collected additional evidence indicating that the use of torture by Russian armed forces in areas under their control was widespread and systematic.

“In some cases, torture was applied with such cruelty that it led to the death of the victim”, he informed the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Meser’s commission visited the de-occupied parts of Ukraine, including the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions.

Reuters reports that it was determined that torture was mostly applied in “places of detention” under the control of the occupying Russian authorities.

Previously, this commission had stated that violations committed by Russian forces in Ukraine, including the use of torture, could constitute crimes against humanity.

It has been revealed that the occupiers established a torture chamber for employees at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Since the beginning of the occupation of Enerhodar and the plant, the Russians have been conducting a systematic campaign of abductions, torture, and killings of plant employees.
