This was stated by deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Yevhenii Perebyinis during the telethon.
Among Ukraine’s expectations are specific algorithms and timelines for Ukraine’s membership in NATO, as well as the issue of reliable security guarantees.
“However, I want to emphasize that we want to receive these guarantees not instead of NATO membership, but for the period until full membership is achieved. It is clear to everyone that NATO membership itself is the best security guarantee because there is Article 5, which speaks of collective security… But until we become a member of the Alliance, we need guarantees of a different nature, and that is what we are working on”, said Perebyinis.
The Deputy Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained that various models of guarantees are currently being discussed, including the Israeli model, which involves strengthening the Ukrainian defense, as well as the model applied to Finland and Sweden.
“We are currently working with our NATO partners to have a specific response and a specific algorithm adopted at the Vilnius summit regarding how, under what conditions, and when Ukraine will become a member of NATO. Therefore, it is still too early to talk about how exactly this will be formulated, but it is absolutely certain that it should be a step forward compared to what was adopted at the Bucharest summit 15 years ago”, Perebyinis added.
As previously reported, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg stated that NATO member countries will send a clear signal at the Vilnius summit in July that they are ready to accept Ukraine into the Alliance.
