She made this statement in Strasbourg during a speech at the plenary session of the European Parliament dedicated to preparations for the European Council on December 14-15, as reported by Ukrinform.
In her address to the European Parliament, Von der Leyen noted that Ukraine has adopted two anti-corruption laws and made amendments to legislation regarding national minorities. She also commended the Ukrainian government for the proposed lobbying law aimed at limiting the influence of oligarchs.
“Ukraine is making significant progress in reforms that lead it toward our European Union. Our enlargement report last month demonstrates clear progress, with over 90% of these reforms completed by that time. We identified four reforms where final steps need to be taken. Since the report and up to now, Ukraine has continued working on all of them”, stated the President of the European Commission.
She reminded that the Ukrainian Parliament recently adopted two anti-corruption laws related to increasing the staff of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and asset declaration. Additionally, amendments were made to legislation regarding national minorities to fulfill the remaining recommendations of the Venice Commission.
“This law provides for broader use of minority languages in schools, in books, and during public events. Indeed, national minority groups have already given a positive response to this legislation. Our initial assessment is also positive”, said Ursula von der Leyen.
The President of the European Commission emphasized that if all these laws are effectively implemented, it would mean the fulfillment of three out of the four remaining recommendations. Furthermore, she mentioned that the Ukrainian government has proposed a new lobbying law aimed at limiting the influence of oligarchs, addressing the last recommendation of the European Commission.
It is worth noting that the issue of starting negotiations on Ukraine’s EU accession will be discussed at the summit in Brussels on December 14-15.
