The increase in the number of detainees is attributed to the situation on the frontlines and the blocking of prisoner exchanges by the Russian side.
Moreover, the conditions in the new camp will comply with all requirements of international humanitarian law. Russian military personnel will be provided with medical assistance, three meals a day, communication with their relatives, and constant access for representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
Furthermore, the camp will be located in the deep rear area, in accordance with the Geneva Conventions.
“Different from Russia, Ukraine adheres to international humanitarian norms. While the Russian side, for example, detains Ukrainian military personnel in regular prisons and penitentiary colonies along with common criminals, sometimes in inhumane conditions, without respecting or effectively recognizing their status as prisoners of war”, the statement says.
