Ukraine plans to establish military police

This was announced by the agency’s press service.

Additionally, a working group within the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Law Enforcement Activity is working on the draft law. Their task is to create an optimal model for the future military justice system, a part of which will be the military police.

The military police is intended to become a military formation with law enforcement functions that will be integrated into the system of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. The organization will be formed based on the Military Law Enforcement Service within the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

This dedicated unit is being established to maintain military discipline among the personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Ministry of Defense, and the State Special Transport Service. It will assume certain responsibilities related to operational and investigative activities as well as pre-trial investigations of military crimes in combat zones.

Among the primary tasks are:

  • Law enforcement activities aimed at preventing, detecting, and stopping military crimes according to the norms of the Criminal Procedural Code of Ukraine and military statutes.
  • Operational and investigative activities.
  • Special prevention within the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the State Special Transport Service.
  • Ensuring law and order, military discipline within the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the State Special Transport Service.
  • Protecting the rights of military personnel.
  • Safeguarding state property.
  • Execution of penalties. The draft law’s developers aim to achieve compatibility between the military police and the structures of NATO member states.

Currently, the document is in the coordination stage.
