Ukraine’s Constitutional Court declares law abolishing parliamentary immunity constitutional

That’s according to the court’s press service.

“On Tuesday, November 1, at a plenary meeting, the Grand Chamber of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine passed a decision in the case of constitutional control of the amendments to the Constitution of Ukraine that entered into force, based on a constitutional motion filed by 50 MPs regarding compliance with the Constitution of Ukraine (constitutionality) of the law ‘On the Introduction of Amendments to Article 80 of the Constitution of Ukraine (Regarding the Immunity of People’s Deputies of Ukraine)’,” the Constitutional Court said.

It specified that the subject of the right to constitutional motion claimed that the law is unconstitutional, believing that it was adopted in violation of the constitutional procedure.

“Having come to the conclusion that the constitutional procedure of review, adoption and entry into force of the law was not violated, the Constitutional Court of Ukraine recognized the disputed law as being in accordance with the Constitution of Ukraine,” the court said.

On April 29, 2020, the Grand Chamber of the Constitutional Court started considering a motion submitted by 50 MPs regarding the constitutionality of the law abolishing parliamentary immunity.
