This information was conveyed by Andriy Yusov, the representative of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry’s Main Intelligence Directorate, during a telethon.
Yusev mentioned that when the information about possible Wagner presence in Belarus first emerged, it was suggested that “one of their purposes is to constantly irritate and provoke neighboring countries, including NATO and the European Union member states.”
“Speaking about the seriousness of these threats – believe me, the Wagner group does not have enough strength and resources to pose a real threat to, for example, Poland. If such a step were taken, it would be suicidal for this group. I am convinced that the Polish army would only welcome such developments and would quickly resolve these issues”, assured the representative of Ukrainian intelligence.
He also disclosed that Western partners of Ukraine do not exaggerate the situation but are closely monitoring the situation with the Wagner militants in Belarus and are preparing for it. After all, it concerns a terrorist organization operating on the territory of another state.
“Among the members of this structure, there are many people who have committed war crimes and possess significant military experience. Therefore, undoubtedly, this factor should be taken into account”, added Yusov.
Regarding the declared number of 10,000 Wagner mercenaries in Belarus, Yusov clarified that it is more declarative and not an accurate representation of their actual presence.
“They are not that numerous there, but movements are still happening. As for weapons and equipment, most of it remains in the occupied territories within the occupation corps when they leave”? Yusov explained.
As previously reported, ISW (Institute for the Study of War) also shares the opinion that the Wagner PMC in Belarus does not pose a threat to Ukraine or Poland.
