European Parliament extends “trade visa-free” with Ukraine

This was reported by the European Parliament.

The decision was made considering the protection of European Union farmers. The new rules allow the European Commission to quickly respond and apply measures it deems necessary in case of serious problems in the EU market or one or more member states due to Ukrainian agro-imports.

In particular, a safeguard is provided for a range of products – poultry meat, eggs, oats, cereals, corn, and honey – if imports exceed the average import volumes recorded in the second half of 2021 and throughout 2022 and 2023, in such a case, tariffs may be reinstated.

After the decision of the European Parliament, the last step in the extension of the agreement should be the decision of the Council of the European Union. The agreement will come into force on June 6, 2024, for a term of one year.

It was previously reported that the European Union intends to strengthen checks on grain imports from Ukraine. The EU wants to clarify whether carriers are not exceeding the agreements and have the right to transit.
