Fragments found in Poland may belong to the Russian X-55 missile

Initially, it was believed that the fragments belonged to a projectile from World War II. However, last Friday, Polish General Tomasz Piotrowski stated that the object may be related to “the events of mid-December last year when the Russians carried out a massive bombardment of Ukraine”.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki made a similar statement, noting that on December 16th, 2022, NATO F-35 planes and Polish planes were scrambled to track the trajectory of a missile that ended up over Polish territory, but the missiles were not found.

According to journalists, the most likely scenario is that on December 16th, a Russian X-55 missile was launched from a Russian plane that flew over Belarusian territory.

This version is not official or final, but military expert Yaroslav Vol’sky attempted to reconstruct the flight of the missile and concluded that “the launch was made from under Smolensk towards Kyiv. One of the missiles veered off course and headed towards Poland through Belarusian territory”.

As previously reported, fragments of an object resembling an “air-to-ground” missile were found in northern Poland in April at a distance of 500 km from the border of Ukraine. The fragments reportedly have Russian inscriptions, indicating Soviet-made weapons, and the warhead is reportedly missing. The Gdańsk prosecutor’s office declined to comment on this information.
