This was stated by the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC), Oleksiy Danilov, in an interview with the Italian publication Corriere.
“Since September 1, when Moscow started using convicts as mercenaries in Bakhmut, 22,816 Russians have been killed. Our losses were 7.5 times smaller. We cannot surrender our cities”, he said.
When asked why Ukraine held onto Bakhmut, the Secretary of the NSDC replied that the Armed Forces must defend their cities because without Ukrainian resistance, Russia would win the war.
It is worth noting that the Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Hanna Malyar, reported that the situation in Bakhmut, Donetsk region, was conditionally stable, and the southwestern outskirts of the city remained under the control of the Ukrainian Defense Forces. According to her, Russian aggressors attempted to regain the lost positions in the direction of Bakhmut but were unsuccessful.
