KYIV, UKRAINE - AUGUST 22: The NATO symbol a four pointed rose and Ukrainian and European Flags stand on the European Square on August 22, 2022 in Kyiv, Ukraine. Russia focuses its attack on the east and south of the country, but the threat of Russian missile strikes on Kyiv remains, despite Russia’s failed attempt to take the city in March. On August 23, Ukraine celebrates Day of the National Flag and on August 24 its 1991 declaration of independence from the USSR. The date also marks six months since Russia launched its large-scale invasion over Ukraine, triggering the largest military attack in Europe since World War II. These are the findings of a poll by KMIS.
54% of Ukrainians believe that membership in NATO is a higher priority at the moment. They prefer EU membership – 24%.
The rest of the respondents either answered ‘neither’ or could not answer at all. Moreover, in all regions, there are more people who prioritize NATO over the EU.
As noted by Deputy Director of KMIS, Anton Hrushevskyi, the poll results quite predictably show the priority for Ukraine of ensuring security and economic development, which are the main drivers of Eurointegration support. At the same time, the prioritization between the EU and NATO indicates that security is still the top factor (and according to other data, we see that over the past year, there has been a significant increase in the unequivocal insistence on NATO accession).
BACKGROUND: The Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KMIS) conducted its own poll from September 29 to October 9, 2023, among 1010 respondents. The survey was not conducted in the territory of Crimea and Donbas, which are occupied by Russia, as well as among citizens who left the country after February 24, 2022.
