“Not much has changed for us”: An officer of the AFU on the change of the Chief of the General Staff

According to Afanasyev, personally for him and his unit, not much has changed because Syrsky has been the commander of the Ground Forces for the past two years, to which they were subordinate. “Syrsky has been the commander for all these two years, not much has changed for us”, Afanasyev noted.

He also expressed regret about the resignation of Valeriy Zaluzhny, stating that he “deserves trust and respect.” “It’s a pity, of course, he deserves trust and respect. But he hasn’t gone anywhere and continues to serve in the Armed Forces”, Afanasyev emphasized.

The officer of the Armed Forces believes that personnel changes in the military leadership are associated with reorganization and updating processes. “There is military leadership. Many people think it’s personal squabbles. I don’t think so. I think it’s related to the reorganization of processes. Especially since there was a person for two years, the eye gets tired. Maybe he will rest and be more effective. Syrsky will work more now”, Afanasyev said.

He also noted that Syrsky has been “behind the scenes” for two years, and now, as the Chief of the General Staff, he is in the spotlight. “The person has gone for promotion and has reached the peak in our army. Everything will be fine, there’s nothing to worry about. Syrsky was the commander for two years, but little was known about him. And now he is in the spotlight, and we begin to discuss whether he is bad or good,” Afanasyev concluded.

Recall that on February 8, Zelensky dismissed Zaluzhny from the post of Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and appointed General Oleksandr Syrsky to this position.
