This is evidenced by the results of a survey of citizens from the five countries that are part of the bloc, conducted on behalf of the “New Europe” center by Kantar company.
Considering the two most popular response options together – “invite Ukraine to become a NATO member regardless of the war” and “invite Ukraine to become a NATO member, but with actual membership after the war ends” – a noticeable majority of citizens in all surveyed countries support them.
The level of support for these two combined options ranges from 50% to 56%, while in the United States, 70% of respondents who expressed their preference favor this option.
The strongest opposition to Ukraine’s NATO membership is observed in Germany (22%), while the lowest opposition is in the United States, where only 12% are against it. As for the other countries, the figures are as follows: 17% in France, 19% in Italy, and 16% in the Netherlands.
For the most cautious supporters of Ukraine’s accession to NATO, an answer option was proposed: “wait with the invitation until the war ends”. Approximately a quarter of respondents with the highest support in the Netherlands (29%) preferred this answer, while the lowest preference was in the United States (19%).
It should be recalled that the defense ministers of NATO countries want to discuss the possible transfer of Western fighter jets to Ukraine at the upcoming meeting in June.
