BERLIN, GERMANY - JANUARY 24: Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico speaks to the media prior to talks with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz at the Chancellery on January 24, 2024 in Berlin, Germany. This is Fico's first trip to Berlin since becoming prime minister late last year. Fico is at odds with many E.U. leaders over a number of issues, including immigration and military support for Ukraine. He has also sought to strengthen Slovakia's ties to Russia and praised the nationalism of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. (Photo by Sean Gallup/Getty Images)
The politician announced this at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on January 25.
“I understand that some of our statements may cause controversy. But we are asked to approve €50 billion for Ukraine for the next four years. Slovakia agrees and will agree. We will not create any obstacles”, Fico said.
The Slovak Prime Minister noted that Bratislava did not object to Ukraine’s invitation to join the European Union, despite what he considers to be “very low” preparedness on Kyiv’s part.
“We also said ‘yes’ to this and assume that now there will be negotiations on accession, which may take more time but must be completed. I apologize, but I will publicly present my position as I see it”, the politician added.
As known, on January 24, Fico visited Uzhgorod, where he held a meeting with the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal. As a result, it became known that Slovakia would transfer heavy engineering equipment to Ukraine.
The €50 billion aid package is being prepared by the EU for Ukraine on the second anniversary of Russia’s invasion.
