This was reported by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba.
“Today, Volodymyr Zelensky held an important summit of the main group of the Special Tribunal, initiated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. 37 participants confirmed their determination to hold the highest leadership of Russia accountable for the crime of aggression against Ukraine. The Special Tribunal will ensure justice”, wrote the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In addition, a “Joint Statement on Efforts to Establish a Tribunal on the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine” has appeared on the ministry’s website. It stated that the summit participants unanimously confirmed their support for holding the highest political and military leadership of Russia accountable for launching an aggressive war against Ukraine.
“The coalition countries are convinced that Russian aggression threatens not only Ukraine but also peace, security, and democracy in general. The initiators of atrocities unseen since World War II, the primary cause of which is the crime of aggression, must be punished by creating an independent mechanism of justice”, the statement reads.
It should be noted that on April 28, North Macedonia became the 36th country to support the creation of a special tribunal against Russia. Moldova joined on April 27, and Costa Rica joined on April 15.
In the autumn of 2022, Zelensky formed a working group to work on the issue of creating a special tribunal to hold the leadership of Russia accountable for the crime of aggression against Ukraine.
The establishment of such a tribunal was supported by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the European Parliament, the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, and individual states.
On January 9, 2023, the European Parliament adopted a recommendation resolution on the establishment of a special tribunal, and on January 26, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe unanimously voted in favor of the creation of the Special Tribunal.
