The explosion of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Station dam could potentially flood 80 populated areas.

Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal, announced this.

“The President of Ukraine has called for an emergency meeting of the National Security and Defense Council. We will also hold a meeting of the State Commission on Technogenic and Environmental Safety and Emergencies”, he said.

Shmyhal also added that the evacuation of residents in the affected areas is currently underway. Evacuation measures are currently being carried out in the Ostriv microdistrict in Kherson, and evacuation trains to Mykolaiv have been organized.

He further noted that the threat to the environment and the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant is being assessed. However, the assessment is complicated by the lack of access to the power plant.

“The destruction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Station is a terrorist act by Russia, which bears full responsibility for it. The destruction of the power station poses an environmental catastrophe for the south of our country. The world must react. Immediately. But not just with words, with actions. Russia must immediately withdraw from the power plant to avoid further catastrophe”, emphasized the Prime Minister.

Shmyhal summarized that the main task at the moment is to evacuate people from the flooded areas.
