SCRANTON, PA - APRIL 12: 155mm artillery shells that are ready to be shipped are stored at the Scranton Army Ammunition Plant on April 12, 2023 in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The U.S. Army is rapidly moving to scale up the production of the ammunition built at the plant and being supplied to Ukraine. The company has been run by General Dynamics since 2006. They are contracted to produce 11,000 shells per month but in the last few months they have exceeded that number. (Photo by Hannah Beier/Getty Images)
This was stated by the President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, as quoted by Radio Free Europe.
Producing the necessary quantity of ammunition takes time. This requires expanding our production capacities. But Ukraine needs ammunition now. The President of the Czech Republic noted that Western allies of Ukraine should not wait for the increase in capacities of European companies, so they are trying to find ammunition “wherever possible and deliver them to Ukraine as quickly as possible”.
However, at the same time, the EU is increasing its own capacities.
“In the near future, European companies will be able to produce the necessary quantity of ammunition to replenish the stocks of European countries, as well as to provide Ukraine with ammunition if it still needs them”, he said.
Meanwhile, Borrell stated that the European Defense Fund with a volume of €5 billion is intended to support Ukraine, so EU countries can use it both to order ammunition and to compensate for their purchases outside the EU.
