The Ukrainian Armed Forces hit their own ship, which the Russians seized in 2014

This was stated by the spokesperson of the Ukrainian Navy, Dmytro Pletenchuk, during a telethon.

“A detective story unfolded around the large landing ship ‘Kostiantyn Olshansky.’ This ship was intended to be used against Ukraine, unfortunately. Therefore, a decision was made to strike this unit with our ‘Neptune.’ The strike was also delivered. The extent of the damage is being specified; it certainly sustained damage. It is currently inoperable”, he said.

It is worth noting that it was quite challenging for the enemy to restore it for use. According to Ukrainian media reports in 2014, when Russia began its occupation of Crimea, our sailors aboard the “Kostiantyn Olshansky” managed to disable at least some onboard systems and at least one of the engines.

Russian sources even indicated that the entire power plant on the “Olshansky” was completely disabled, meaning both Polish-made 16ZV/40/48 diesel engines, each with a power output of 21,000 horsepower, were out of commission.

When the occupiers announced their intentions to restore the ship in 2023, Ukrainian analytical publications specializing in military topics doubted whether the enemy would actually take such a step. However, apparently out of desperation, the Russians dared to restore the “Olshansky,” and this decision has backfired significantly. And now this ship has been struck by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
