Ukraine and Estonia agree on security guarantees on the country’s path to NATO

This was reported by the Deputy Head of the Office of the President Igor Zhovkva.

“What is symbolic is the anniversary Joint Declaration in support of Ukraine in NATO!”, he noted.

According to him, the declaration provides for “readiness to cooperate to bring Ukraine closer to NATO membership, in particular in the context of the NATO Summit in Vilnius in July, as well as a commitment to coordinate joint actions for guarantees of Ukraine’s security even before our membership”.

Estonia has become one of the first ten Alliance countries to formalize support for Ukraine’s NATO membership in similar declarations. Czech Republic, Belgium, Montenegro, Lithuania, Poland, Italy, Latvia, Iceland, and Slovenia have already done so.

“The ultimate goal is clear and understandable – Ukraine’s full membership as soon as possible. In the meantime, we are already working on creating effective security guarantees, which we must receive from Alliance member states even before joining NATO”, said Zhovkva.

It is worth noting that German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that the decision on Ukraine’s NATO membership is not currently relevant: “The doors are slightly ajar, but it is not the time to decide on this issue now”.

Poland has expressed support for Ukraine’s rapid accession to NATO and criticized Germany’s position on “slightly ajar doors”.
