Ukraine called on the world to recognize the deportation of Crimean Tatars in 1944 as genocide

This was stated in a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

“We call on our international partners, including participants of the International Crimean Platform, to condemn this crime of deportation and recognize the deportation of the Crimean Tatar people in 1944 as genocide. We are convinced that only Ukraine’s victory and the liberation of the Crimean Peninsula can put an end to the systematic repression against the indigenous Crimean Tatar people and restore respect for human rights in the world”, the ministry noted.

As known, based on fabricated cases in 1944, the USSR accused the Crimean Tatar people of collaboration with the Nazi authorities, which served as a pretext to initiate the deportation mechanism. Crimean Tatars were prohibited from using their native language, practicing their religion, and preserving their own culture. The Soviet authorities sought to erase the national identity of a people who are indigenous to Ukraine.

“We demand that the Russian Federation cease the violation of human rights in the temporarily occupied territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, immediately release all political prisoners, and ensure full compliance with the obligations of the Russian Federation as an occupying state under international law”, emphasized the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
