Zelensky extends martial law throughout Ukraine

On Thursday, November 9, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed bills to extend the period of martial law and general mobilization throughout the territory of Ukraine.

According to the bill posted on the website of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the measures have been extended for 90 days until February 14, 2024.

The extension of martial law automatically raises questions about holding presidential elections this spring. The eighth presidential elections in Ukraine since the declaration of independence in 1991 were scheduled for March 31, 2024.

However, the electoral process can only begin 30 days after the end or cancellation of martial law in the country. In other words, the start can only be after March 15, making it impossible to hold elections within the established timeframe.

It is worth noting that on November 8, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine voted to extend the period of martial law and general mobilization throughout the territory of Ukraine until February 14, 2024. Currently, martial law in Ukraine was set to expire on November 16, 2023.

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, martial law has been in effect, and general mobilization has been declared, prohibiting conscripts from leaving the country, with some exceptions.
