The works of classical world art by Eduard Manet, Eduard Hopper, Caspar David Friedrich, William Margetson, Bartholomew Murillo received a new visuality in the collages of the French artist Fanny Lechevalier.
She supplemented the stories of these paintings with pictures taken during russian war against Ukraine. In particular, the series of works began with a photo of a woman from Kharkiv who was injured in the face in the first days of Russia’s full-scale attack on Ukraine. Turning Iryna’s head, the artist saw “Girl with a Pearl Earring” by Jan Vermeer.
Since then, all of the artist’s posts have been devoted to Russia’s war against Ukraine.
The artist publishes her paintings and explains the circumstances they describe.
The Wanderer above the Sea of Fog by Kaspar David Friedrich tells the story of a Ukrainian fighter who lost a leg fighting for Ukraine. According to the plot of the collage, he looks at the city of Severodonetsk, which was destroyed by the Russian invaders.
John Millet’s painting Ophelia became the basis for the story about the unsuccessful crossing of the Siverskyi Donets river by Russian troops. In the collage, a Ukrainian military man inspects a broken tank of the invaders.
A Bar at Folies-Bergere by Edouard Manet is a scene from the front-line town of Bachmut. There is still a shop with pies, which the Ukrainian military came to buy.
Henri de Brakeleer’s painting The Man in the Chair became the background for the Ukrainian military that preparing dinner on a farm near Izyum.
“Edward Hopper’s paintings often reflect people’s feelings of loneliness or isolation. A strange calmness reigns over them, guided by the expectation of the worst,” writes the author of the collage, taking his Hotel near the railway as a basis.
