In the park named after M. Rylsky, 13 houses were installed for bats - the only flying mammals, most of which species are listed in the Red Book of Ukraine. Such houses or bat boxes help to preserve the population of these animals.
This was reported by the “Kyivzelenbud” CE.
The usual places for bats to stay are hollows. The research, which was commissioned by the “Kyivzelenbud” association in September-October 2021, recorded that in the most visited part of the park at night, 5 species of bats can be observed.
As stated in the message, in total, 50 such houses are planned to be installed in the capital’s green zones in the near future. They have already appeared in Partizanska Slava Park, Nyvky Park, and in the territories of Kyiv forestry farms.
Bat-boxes are fixed on trees at a height of about 3 m with the help of special wire and bars that do not damage the tree bark. The boxes are made by the masters of the district maintenance for green spaces and the capital forestry enterprises.
“Installing bat houses, as well as ducks’ houses, squirrel houses, planting Moorish lawns – this is all designed to support biodiversity in the capital. In this way, we help animals, birds and insects live comfortably in the metropolis. At the same time, we support the productivity of our city’s ecosystems, because each species has its own niche and role in nature,” Oleksiy Korol, CEO of the “Kyivzelenbud” said.
