The Ukrainian government has not yet determined the exact amount of financial claims against Russia within the framework of the Genocide Convention process, but a decision has been made that such a claim will be made.
Anton Korinevich, Ukraine’s agent in The Hague, reported this.
“Reparations will be an important component of our case. We emphasized this to the court – I, as Ukraine’s agent, and other representatives of the legal team involved in the process in The Hague”, he said.
The ambassador also reminded that the crime of genocide is “the most serious crime in international law”, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 based on unfounded allegations of “genocide in Donbas” deserves punishment.
“There is no basis to initiate aggression, to use weapons based on fake manipulations, speculations about genocide”, he emphasized.
However, during the briefing, he stressed that there is currently no decision regarding the specific amount of claims.
“We will address questions related to the amount and other specifics (of Ukraine’s claims against Russia) later”, the ambassador added.
It is worth noting that on September 18, hearings resumed at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding Ukraine’s lawsuit against Russia. In this case, Ukraine argues that Russia violated the 1948 Genocide Convention by justifying its military aggression with baseless accusations of “genocide” by Ukraine.
