The Verkhovna Rada has voted in favor of the legalization of medical cannabis in Ukraine in the second reading.

This was reported by MP Yaroslav Zhelezniak.

Bill No. 7457 was adopted with a total of 248 votes.

Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelensky supported the legalization of medicines based on medical cannabis in Ukraine.

The National Security and Defense Council (RNBO) urged the Parliament to adopt a law on medical cannabis, emphasizing that “the right to life is an inalienable right of every person,” and the state is obligated to create conditions for effective and accessible medical services for all.

Medicines based on medical cannabis are used to reduce pain, muscle spasms and seizures, treat anorexia, PTSD, and anxiety disorders. These drugs are also used in the treatment of certain types of epilepsy, glaucoma, psoriasis, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis. They also alleviate pain for seriously ill and palliative care patients, including those with cancer and HIV.

In 2021, the government adopted a resolution removing several substances based on cannabis from the list of prohibited substances in Ukraine. Medications based on these substances are also used to alleviate side effects after chemotherapy.
