German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized that his decision is linked to the desire to prevent a direct confrontation between Russia and NATO.

He stated this in an interview with Märkische Allgemeine.

As the head of the government, Scholz feels responsible for matters of war and peace, particularly concerning security in Europe. Regarding the issue of Taurus missiles, he mentioned that alongside strong support for Ukraine, one thing remains important to him: to do everything possible to prevent an escalation of war, in other words, to prevent a war between Russia and NATO.

“And with each delivery of weapons, we will carefully consider what it means in this context. That’s why I made this decision”, he said.

Scholz also noted that Germany will not be sending its military to Ukraine. However, according to him, Germany supports Ukraine with weapons and ammunition “more than any other European country”. They allocate over 28 billion euros for this purpose, more than many other countries combined. Germany will continue to do so as much as necessary.

It’s worth mentioning that according to t-online portal, Chancellor Scholz may be concerned about providing Ukraine with long-range Taurus missiles due to the specifics of target acquisition. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock believes that Berlin should provide Ukraine with Taurus missiles.
