Construction of units No. 5 and No. 6 has started at the Khmelnytsky Nuclear Power Plant using the American technology AP1000 Westinghouse.
This was announced by “Energoatom.”
A distinctive feature of this technology is the ability to maneuver the units, which is extremely important for Ukraine as the Russians destroy the balancing capacities of Ukrainian energy.
“This is a major geopolitical project of mutual interest for Ukraine and the USA. The technologies we will jointly build and develop will push the Russians out of the European nuclear energy market”, said Ukraine’s Minister of Energy Herman Galushchenko.
Against the backdrop of constant shelling of critical infrastructure, Ukraine needs more energy capacities. The main focus is on nuclear energy, as it generates over 50% of the country’s electricity.
Ukraine requires additional power units due to the occupation of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. These units at the Khmelnytsky Nuclear Power Plant will be the first of nine planned to be built in Ukraine in collaboration with Westinghouse using the AP1000 technology. The KhNPP-5 will be the first nuclear power unit in Ukraine of non-Soviet design.
Earlier we reported that in 2024, Ukraine plans to start the construction of another four units at the Khmelnytsky Nuclear Power Plant, two of which will be using the modern American AP1000 technology.
