The street is planned to become the business card of the city.

The municipality of the city of Luxembourg announced that the new street N3 will be named “Kyiv boulevard” in honor of the capital city of Ukraine, Kyiv.

By 2023, the N3 overpass is expected to become the so-called “southern gateway” to the Luxembourg city.

The future Kyiv Boulevard is a rather long road from the central railway station through Howald to Hesperange. A tram route will run along the first part of the boulevard, which is an analogue of the underground metro and is a kind of a business card of the city.

It is worth noting that the city council initially decided to call the boulevard ‘Boulevard de Kiev’, according to the French spelling. Such a step caused lively discussions among the local population and was extremely negatively perceived by the Ukrainian community, since the name “Kiev” comes from the Russian language, while “Kyiv” would be the correct Ukrainian transliteration.

“As a result, the City Council of Luxembourg listened to the wishes of the people and considered the position of the Ukrainian association in Luxembourg LUkraine asbl and the Ukrainian community. On Friday, the Luxembourg City Municipality adopted a new decision, according to which the N3 overpass will have its full name: Boulevard de Kyiv, Capitale de l’Ukraine (Kyiv Boulevard, the capital of Ukraine). In its statement, the local authorities recognized that since independence from the USSR in 1991, the capital of Ukraine has been known as Kyiv, and by its decision to choose the Ukrainian transliteration, Luxembourg expresses its solidarity and support for the Ukrainian people,” the message reads.

Earlier, the Prime Minister of Luxembourg visited Bucha and Irpin and promised support in the investigation of war crimes.
