Latvia has transferred 271 confiscated vehicles to Ukraine over the course of a year, with a total estimated value of nearly one million euros. These vehicles were confiscated from drunk drivers.
The information was reported by the Delfi portal.
According to the Latvian State Revenue Service, from the beginning of 2023, 271 vehicles were handed over to Ukraine, with a total preliminary value of 903,453 euros. Additionally, the government is currently considering documents for the transfer of another 34 vehicles to Ukraine, with a total value of 161,880 euros.
On March 7, 2023, the Latvian parliament unanimously supported amendments to the law on providing assistance to the civilian population of Ukraine. The law created the basis for transferring vehicles confiscated from drunk drivers to Ukraine, said the Chairman of the Defense Commission, Raimonds Bergmanis.
“At present, we can sell confiscated vehicles from drunk drivers, send them for recycling, or dismantle them for spare parts. However, we see that under current conditions, they would be a useful support for the people of Ukraine”, he said.
Confiscated vehicles have been allocated to various recipients in Ukraine, including the Vinnytsia Regional Clinical Hospital, the territorial medical association of the Kupiansk council, and military units.
