Polish senators unanimously passed the resolution during a vote in the country's Senate on Thursday, May 11.
This was reported by Polish Radio.
The document emphasizes that by defending itself against Russia, Ukraine is defending Europe and is a key link in protecting the continent from aggression from the East.
“Today, Ukraine has the strongest army on the continent with extraordinary combat experience. The Ukrainian army quickly re-equips with NATO equipment and uses operational art and tactics developed over decades among Western allies. Defenders need real support through closer political and military cooperation with NATO countries”, the resolution of the Polish Senate states.
Senators said that during the NATO summit in Vilnius, Ukraine should receive “much more than in previous statements about the open-door policy”.
This should be an important stage in preparing Ukraine for full membership. The Polish Senate believes that Ukraine’s accession to NATO should be a political decision based on the results of a strategic analysis of challenges and threats beyond the Alliance’s eastern border.
However, the document states that Russia presents its invasion of Ukraine as a defense against NATO, so in the event of its victory, the aggressors will not stop at the western border of Ukraine, but will begin to advance further into the territory of the Alliance. Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia have correctly assessed the Russian threat, according to Polish senators. Meanwhile, most European capitals are only now agreeing with them, the resolution says.
Earlier, it was reported that NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg assured that all members of the Alliance support the idea of Ukraine’s accession. The question is only when it will happen. Stoltenberg noted that he cannot yet announce the terms of Ukraine’s accession to the Alliance.
