The Zaporizhzhia Regional Prosecutor's Office has initiated an investigation into the shooting of Ukrainian prisoners of war by Russian military near Zaporizhzhia.
The Office of the Prosecutor General reported this incident.
According to the investigation, in December 2023, during a military clash with the Armed Forces of Ukraine near the settlement of Robotine in the Zaporizhzhia region, Russian servicemen took three Ukrainian defenders captive. An hour after capturing them, the occupiers shot the Ukrainian prisoners of war, blatantly violating Article 3 of the Geneva Convention on the Treatment of Prisoners of War.
A video of this crime was circulated on the internet. The prosecution has classified the actions of Russian military personnel as a violation of the laws and customs of war, combined with intentional murder.
This is another case of a gross violation of international humanitarian law by the aggressor country regarding the treatment of prisoners of war. In the last month, videos have emerged online depicting Russian military personnel executing Ukrainian soldiers who surrendered as prisoners of war. The use of Ukrainian prisoners of war as “human shields” on the front lines has also been documented.
Pre-trial investigation into the war crimes committed by Russian military personnel is ongoing.
