The expert council of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine on issues of overcoming the consequences of Russification and totalitarianism recommends to the National Music Academy of Ukraine named after P.I Tchaikovsky to consider the issue of refusing on behalf of Tchaikovskiy of the name of the educational institution. This was reported by the press service of the ministry.

The department notes that the name of Pyotr Tchaikovsky can be present in the Ukrainian cultural and public space, since he was not an imperial chauvinist, an enemy of humanism or universal human values as such.

“He can be honored where it is appropriate and historically justified in Ukraine, as well as in any country in the world. No more and no less than Chopin and Mickiewicz, Ravel and Hugo, Vivaldi, and Dante. At the same time, the situation looks absurd when there are two conservatories in the world – in Moscow and Kyiv with Tchaikovsky’s name, and a fragment of his first symphony is an officially approved anthem that sounds during the performance of the Russian Olympic team under a neutral flag, being a symbol of the current of Russia as a state,” – the council say.

The expert council unanimously recommend to the academy staff to consider the issue of refusing the name of P. I. Tchaikovsky in the name of the institution.
