The Ukrainian Navy has disclosed details of the destruction of the sanctioned tanker "Mechanik Pogodin," which the Russians were using as a command post.

This was reported by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The sanctioned tanker under the Russian flag, “Mechanik Pogodin,” which the Russians were using as a command post, was located in the Kherson region before the explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station. This vessel was destroyed by the Ukrainian Air Force near the Kinburn Spit.

The tanker “Mechanik Pogodin” belonged to the sanctioned Russian company VEB-Leasing OJSC (St. Petersburg). In August 2018, the ship was arrested by a decision of a Ukrainian court, and until the summer of 2023, it was located in the territory of the Kherson seaport.

After the Russians blew up the dam of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station, the tanker was washed ashore on the Kinburn Spit, temporarily controlled by the Russians.

Later, the occupiers set up an observation post on this ship for reconnaissance purposes, as well as electronic warfare means. The vessel was periodically used as a platform for launching strikes with FPV drones on the territory of the Kherson region.

The Ukrainian Navy emphasized that the ship corresponds to the definition of a military object and added:

“Therefore, the destruction of the Russian tanker ‘Mechanik Pogodin’ not only thwarted the aggressors in the implementation of their plans but was also carried out in full compliance with the norms of international humanitarian law”.
