A draft resolution (No. 9491) has been registered in the Verkhovna Rada, calling for an appeal to the President of Georgia and the parliaments of EU member states to take humanitarian action and pardon Mikheil Saakashvili.

In order to preserve the life and health of the Ukrainian citizen, the Verkhovna Rada plans to:

  • Call on the President of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili, to grant access to Mikheil Saakashvili to Dmitry Lubinets, the authorized representative of the Verkhovna Rada on human rights.
  • Appeal to the President of Georgia, requesting a humanitarian act and pardon for Saakashvili, taking into account his serious physical condition.
  • Address the parliaments of EU member states, requesting them to adopt appropriate decisions and resolutions regarding the necessity of the Georgian President’s humanitarian act and pardon for Saakashvili, confirming the importance of adherence to international human rights standards.

It should be noted that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia has expressed “deep concern” over Ukraine’s decision to send Georgian Ambassador Georgi Zakarashvili for consultations.

They recalled that the European Court of Human Rights had previously rejected Saakashvili’s request to travel abroad for medical treatment, and described the Ukrainian government’s decision as one that “significantly damages the strategic relations between the two countries and directly interferes in the internal affairs of the state”.

The ministry hopes that official Kyiv will review its decision and make efforts to further develop the “historically friendly relations” between the countries.

We have also reported that Zelensky called for Saakashvili to return to Ukraine, stating that Russia is killing Saakashvili through the hands of the authorities in Tbilisi.
