As a result of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, 1373 cultural institutions and over 550 cultural monuments have been damaged or destroyed.
Galyna Hryhorenko, Deputy Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine, reported this in an interview with Die Presse.
“According to our statistics, as of today, 1373 cultural institutions have been damaged or destroyed: libraries, museums, theaters, philharmonics, and art schools. Over 550 cultural monuments and more than 200 religious buildings have been damaged or destroyed”, she said.
Hryhorenko reported that an important part of Ukraine’s work is “documenting the damage in accordance with international standards”. In addition, buildings are being conserved to prevent further destruction, with the aim of restoring them after the victory”.
“According to the approximate calculations of the World Bank, cultural reconstruction will cost 7 billion dollars”, the deputy minister noted.
UNESCO estimated the damage to cultural heritage sites of Ukraine from the large-scale aggression of the Russian Federation at approximately 2.6 billion dollars.
