Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to summon the Georgian ambassador over the situation concerning the former President of Georgia and Ukrainian citizen, Mikheil Saakashvili.

This was stated in an address by the head of state posted on Telegram.

“Right now, Russia, with the hands of the Georgian authorities, is killing Ukrainian citizen Mikheil Saakashvili. We have repeatedly called on official Tbilisi to stop this abuse and reach an agreement on Saakashvili’s return to Ukraine. Our partners, in coordination with Ukraine, have also proposed various rescue options”,  Zelensky said.

The President noted that he instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to summon the Georgian ambassador to Ukraine, express a strong protest to him, and offer to leave Ukraine within 48 hours for consultations with his capital. He emphasized that he once again calls on the Georgian authorities to hand over Saakashvili to Ukraine for necessary treatment.

“And I urge our partners not to ignore this situation and to intervene to save this person. No authority in Europe has the right to sacrifice people; life is a fundamental European value”, Zelensky emphasized.
