Ukraine will involve any NATO member country in the ongoing war with Russia. Therefore, membership in the Alliance will not happen as long as this war continues.

President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized this during a joint press conference in Kyiv with Estonian President Alar Karis.

“We are reasonable people, we understand that we will not drag any NATO country into a war. Therefore, we understand that we will not be NATO members while this war is ongoing. Not because we don’t want to, but because it is impossible”, Zelensky said.

At the same time, he stressed that Ukraine is not seeking alternatives to NATO membership but requires security guarantees until the current war is over.

“Today, when we talk about security guarantees for Ukraine, it includes sanctions, financial guarantees, weapons, and so on. What exists today is not on paper but in reality. If we want to have them on paper, it should be clearly stated or accompanied by something specific, that these security guarantees are in effect until Ukraine receives the ultimate security guarantee, namely, NATO membership”, explained the President.
